All you need to know about 2021 Africa Cup of Nations

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament was initially slated to hold on January 9th to February 6th 2021. However, it was postponed due to the global outbreak of Corona Virus. Consequently, all continental competitions and events to be held were halted and rescheduled.

Having made consultations, the governing body of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) decided that the biennial men tournament will now hold on January 9th to February 6th 2022. Although, marred by the delays in the delivery of infrastructure, insurgency and the Anglophonic crisis, Cameroon will finally be hosting the 2021 Africa Cup of nations since 1972. A total of 24 teams will be slogging it out at the championship, these teams will be drawn in 6 groups, 4 for each.

At the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria defeated Senegal by a lone goal, winning their second title and first since 1990. They will be hoping to replicate their previous success at the 2021 Africa cup of Nations.

The qualified Teams/Groups

A – Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cape Verde

B – Senegal, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Malawi

C – Morocco, Ghana, Comoros, Gabon

D – Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Guinea Bissau

E – Algeria, Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast

F – Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania, Gambia

Six venues will be a nest to the 24 teams across 5 cities of Cameroon, they are:

Players to watch out for

Mohamed Salah of Egypt

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah hoping to lead Egypt to their first Africa Cup of Nations title since 2010. He is one of the best performing player in world football across 2021-22, scoring 23 goals in all competition for Liverpool.

Sadio Mane of Senegal

Senegal’s most valuable player will be heading into the tournament with great expectations, with the hope that he can create magic for the Teranga Lions.

Riyad Mahrez of Algeria

The Algerian star is unarguably one of the talented stars headlining the tournament, but the pressure will be on him to lead his nation as captain to successive AFCON titles after their victory in 2019. He has so far scored 6 goals and made four assists in the premier league this season.

Sebastien Haller of Ivory Coast

Haller is one of the hopeful to shine at this year’s afcon. He boasts of 10 goals so far in the UEFA champions league, more than any other player in the competition.
