Foods To Try In Nigeria

Whilst traveling around, the one thing every traveler is bound to experience is the food. Food is an important part of culture that lets you observe the culture and customs of people with just your palates / taste buds. The downside to this is, your experience can make or mar your perception about the food. So foodies, gather round and let’s explore the foods to try out in Nigeria.

Jollof Rice

It’s a no-brainer that Jollof would be on the list as it is probably Nigeria’s most famous food export. With roots from Senegal, it’s no doubt that Nigeria has added its own twist and flair to it. Now, owambe (party) jollof is a whole different ball game because for some reason, it tastes even better than home-made jollof. You can have this in any part of Nigeria.

Pounded Yam

Pounded yam is one meal that is popular around the country. From the North to the South, it is one meal that can be eaten with a variety of soups. Whichever Nigerian city or state you are in, you can find pounded yam and eat with any local soup.

 

Tuwo- Shinkafa

This is a delicacy that is peculiar to the Northern part of Nigeria. . This is another mouth-watering meal that originated from the north but is eaten by many and no one prepares it better than the Hausas. Enjoy it better with Miyan Taushe [Melon soup]. 

Akara

The bougie folks prefer to call it beans cake. Akara is popular delicacy among the Yoruba people of the western part of the country. This is definitely something you should try with pap or bread.

Agege Bread

It is a soft locally baked Nigerian bread. It is a popular choice among many Nigerians. You can get it in any part of the country and enjoy it with butter, egg, stew, or any spread you want. 

Ogbono Soup

Soups are a staple part of Nigerian delicacies . From the east to the west, every ethnic group has native soups that cater to their palates. Ogbono is a must try soup that originated from the middle eastern part of the country. Ogbono soup is best with eba but you can have it with a variety of swallows. 

Porridge

Yam porridge is another meal eaten by most Nigerians. It’s mainly prepared with yam, palm oil, pepper and other ingredients. All of these are then mashed together (slightly or otherwise, depending on the cook)  to create an amazing version of Yam.

Beans

Beans is a popular and flexible food option in Nigeria. It can be prepared as beans porridge and can also be made with stew. For more options, it can be eaten alongside rice, plantain and even bread.
