“Tourism, a Platform for Overcoming the Pandemic”: UN, Secretary-General
The United Nations Secretary-General sent a groundbreaking message to the world stressing the important role of the Travel and Tourism sector in promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and protecting the most vulnerable members of our societies.
The Secretary-General states that tourism is central to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and many rely on it for their livelihoods, especially women and particularly in the most vulnerable countries in the world, including Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries. In addition, biodiversity preservation depends heavily on the tourism industry in many areas of the world, from conservation to the income produced by such efforts.
“Tourism can be a platform for overcoming the pandemic. By bringing people together, Tourism can promote solidarity and trust”: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
Also, he states that tourism may overcome the pandemic by bringing people together and will cultivate unity and confidence. These are key elements in fostering the global collaboration that is so desperately needed today.
Finally, the UN Secretary-General further urges all those involved in tourism to explore ways and measures in which the sector can recover fully. In his words, “In our path to a better world, we must fulfill our promise to leaving none behind”.
