Story of the debate about Nigerian Jollof Rice vs Ghanaian Jollof rice, the Jollof Rice Challenge

Who Wins the African Jollof Rice Challenge?

Which African country makes the best Jollof rice?

This sounds like a simple question, but it is not. In 2015, this question set off a social media war between Nigeria and Ghana, prompting the famous Nigerian Jollof vs Ghanaian Jollof debate.

In April this year, the argument grew fiercer when Nigeria’s Culture Minister Lai Muhammed told CNN journalist Richard Quest that Senegal makes the best Jollof rice.

But Vice President, Prof Yemi Osibanjo, disagreed.

“And by the way, we all know that Nigerian Jollof rice is the best, we beat the Ghanaians and the Senegalese hands down,” he said during The Platform event held at the Covenant Christian Centre.

Nigerians trolled Senegal and Lai Muhammed.

To put that debate to rest, Brand Television Network has launched the African Jollof Rice Challenge, with as much as USD5, 000 up for grabs for making this famed recipe.

The rule of the game is simple: roll up your sleeves, grab the apron and make the best Jollof rice to cart home all the bucks!

BTV Executive Producer, Felix King, said the contest would serve as a platform to determine which African country makes the best Jollof rice.

King said: “There is no official position yet on which country has the best Jollof rice in Africa, hence, the Btv’s desire to unravel the mystery through this contest.

‘’None of the perspectives has proved convincing, despite Nigeria’s strong claims to the African cuisine. The different viewpoints on the streets have only generated more controversies and continuous placement of different points to back up individual claims.’’

The grand finale of the contest holds on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 as part of activities lined up to mark the World Jollof Day.

Until the taste does the talking on that big stage, nobody should lay claim to this incredible African recipe. So, if you are a fan of African food, now is the time to prove your love.
